New Plating Material for Hysteresis Devices

Date: February 22, 2006

Subject: Magtrol announces full RoHS compliancy of Hysteresis Brake (HB) line

Dear Valued Customer,

The European Union has adopted Directive 2002/95/EC, Restrictions of Hazardous Substances (RoHS), which restricts the use of lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBBs) and polybrominated biphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in all electronic products placed on the market in the European Union after July 1, 2006.

As per Article 2 of the European Union’s Directive 2002/95/EC:

Scope 1.0
Without prejudice to Article 6, this Directive shall apply to electrical and electronic equipment falling under the categories 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and 10 set out in Annex IA to Directive No 2002/96/EC (WEEE) and to electric light bulbs, and luminaries in households.

Medical Devices (category 8), with the exception of all implanted and infected products, as well as Monitoring & Control Instruments (category 9) remain exempt from the most recent RoHS Directive, according to the UK’s Department of Trade and Industry.  As a result, the Hysteresis Brake (HB) line encompasses Magtrol’s only products affected by Directive 2002/95/EC.  The remainder of Magtrol’s products are Monitoring & Control Instruments (category 9), and as such are exempt from the Directive.

Conscious of its environmental impact, Magtrol has ensured that its entire Hysteresis Brake (HB) line is fully compliant with the European Union’s RoHS Directive.  Magtrol’s first step toward compliancy took effect February 1, 2005, when clear (blue) trivalent chromate replaced hexavalent chromium in the zinc plating process for Hysteresis Brake (HB) products.  In addition to this new plating process, Magtrol has replaced standard 60/40 (tin/lead) solder with lead-free solder in the wire connection soldering process.  All other materials used in the manufacture of Magtrol’s Hysteresis Brake (HB) line were compliant before the European Union issued its RoHS Directive.

None of the above-mentioned changes affect form, fit, function or performance of any Magtrol Hysteresis Brakes.

Magtrol keeps track of fully RoHS compliant brakes by the serial numbers (S/N) of the units.  Part numbers (P/N) of the products have not changed.  In addition to this tracking procedure, lead-free (Pb-Free) decals indicate RoHS compliancy.
